At the 1987 Electric Off-Road Car World Championship in the UK, the prototype Optima Mid dominated the 4WD A-Main final race securing 5 out of 10 starting positions. Following its success, the Optima Mid was commercialized to achieve worldwide racing acclaim.

In 1988, the Turbo Optima Mid Special was released in limited quantities as the final evolution of the Optima Mid and sold out instantly due to overwhelming demand. Now, this legendary machine returns in 2025 as Volume 18 of Kyosho's Vintage Series.

The original Turbo Optima Mid Special featured an 18mm longer wheelbase than the Optima Mid, enhancing high-speed stability and cornering performance.

Its main chassis was designed for improved battery weight distribution and constructed from FRP sandwiched between carbon plates, striking an optimal balance of flexibility and rigidity. The belt and belt cover were also specifically designed for the Turbo Optima Mid Special, and the body was newly created to match the chassis.

This faithful reproduction retains all these defining features while incorporating updates to support modern power systems and R/C electronics. Previously optional parts are now included as standard, along with several newly developed components. Unlike the original, this is not a limited edition but a permanent addition to Kyosho’s catalog.

THE FIRST 2WD OFF ROAD WORLD WINNER!
Only eight months after it’s release on July 11, 1985, the legendary RC10 driven by Jammin’ Jay Halsey claimed victory as the first IFMAR 2WD Stock World Champion. It was at this inaugural edition of the IFMAR 1:10 Electric Off-Road World Championships in Del Mar California where history was made.

At the time Jay didn’t know how important the race was and how legendary the buggy he drove would become. Looking back, he now realizes the impact it made in RC history; not only for Team Associated, but for himself as well. On December 5th, 1984 the All-American designed Team Associated RC10 was introduced to the RC world. Being the first to take home the gold in both the ROAR National and IFMAR 2WD World Championships, the RC10 secured its place as a legend in RC car history.
 
This year (2024) marks the 40th anniversary of the RC10 and we are proud to offer this special limited “Jammin” Jay Halsey Edition kit.
 
Staying true to the world champion winning buggy, this kit features the same race car technology introduced in the 80s along with the same upgrades Jay ran at the first IFMAR Worlds in Del Mar California. It was this race along with many others that helped launch Jay’s career in the television and film industry.

The RC10 started as the vision of Team Associated’s founder Roger Curtis (RC) and became one of the most iconic RC cars in history.

At the inaugural IFMAR Off Road World Championships, Jay Halsey took first place with his RC10 in the 2WD class, but did you know he also raced a prototype 4WD RC10 in the 4WD class and took second place?

IT STARTED FROM THE BEGINNING!

Going all the way back to 1985 at the very first IFMAR Off Road World Championships, Team Associated had always been interested in entering the 4WD buggy market. That’s why at that race, in Del Mar, California, Jay Halsey drove a prototype 4WD RC10. After taking first place in the 2WD Stock class earlier that day, Jay was poised to take first in the 4WD class as well. As fate would have it though, Jay finished a close second driving that prototype 4WD RC10 buggy. It wouldn’t be until many years later that Team Associated would finally produce a 4WD off road kit, the B44. To fill in the gap between that first IFMAR Off Road Worlds and the release of the B44, many aftermarket companies designed and produced their own RC10 4WD conversion kits. The Bigwig is back!
This is a 2017 version of the shaft-driven 4WD buggy that was released to commemorate 10 years of Tamiya R/C models back in 1986. It features several updates while keeping largely to the classic design of the original. The slimline body, designed and penned in 1986 by famed Japanese designer Takuya Yura, is still a classic today, as it possesses advanced aerodynamics thanks to his encyclopedic design knowledge. Updated markings retain the flavor of the original Bigwig and include the Mooncraft logo of Yura's design company.

King of the Off-Road
The extremely stable shaft-driven 4WD drive train has excellent efficiency thanks to full ball bearings, while differential gears ensure cornering is smooth. 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension employs A-shaped front and H-shaped rear arms for excellent durability, with CVA oil dampers for high-quality suspension stroke. Dish wheels are not just aesthetically pleasing, but also practical on the off-road surfaces the Bigwig (2017) calls home; they are paired with grippy oval bock tires. The rack and pinion steering setup remain unique to the Bigwig among Tamiya R/C cars.

Losi And The JRX2

Gil Losi Jr. and his father "Pops" started Team Losi selling homemade aftermarket radio control parts and accessories at their local skatepark snack bar, turning it into a mini hobby shop. Over the next ten years they purchased the famous "Ranch Pit Shop" and dedicated over three years to develop their first race-dedicated RC vehicle: the now-iconic JRX2. Losi And The JRX2

Gil Losi Jr. and his father "Pops" started Team Losi selling homemade aftermarket radio control parts and accessories at their local skatepark snack bar, turning it into a mini hobby shop. Over the next ten years they purchased the famous "Ranch Pit Shop" and dedicated over three years to develop their first race-dedicated RC vehicle: the now-iconic JRX2. • EVO Bead: The EVO bead design uses an 1/8 scale style L-shaped bead mount. This allows the user to glue the tire to the wheel more effectively, creating a much stronger glue bond. 
• EVO Wheel: The EVO wheel has been redesigned to be stronger and stiffer.
